Newsjacking is the creative art of marketing your products through newsworthy events that have a wide range of people talking.

Timing for Successful Newsjacking

Someone is going to be first to jump on an idea, it should be you!

You cannot wait for the issue to slow down or lose traction… move fast!

When you spot an opportunity, pounce immediately!
Typically when something wild goes down and everyone is talking…
Start moving at an idea.

Audience for Newsjacking

If your audience is talking about it, you need to be on it!

Send emails to your list, post to social media, create “stories” in IG, tweet about it… get involved immediately.

Being the first into an issue can be awesome for your business to ride a wave.

Being Creative in Newsjacking

Your creativity is by far the most important piece of the puzzle in creating energy towards your product, service or brand.

Here is where you have the opportunity to create something new to sell: whether that is a new product or new service offered.

Or you have the opportunity to shift the focus from the current issue and bring that focus into your brand, molding the issue into your brand awareness.

This is where the opportunity can be tacky or genius… which can be a thin line.

Why is Newsjacking Smart?

Ok… let’s talk paid social media advertising for a moment.

When you setup an ad on Meta (Facebook or Instagram), you are telling the platform to go find me engagement (clicks, add to cart, purchases etc…)

Now Meta is bidding for this engagement based upon a CPM (cost per 1000 impressions)

And you can drive down those costs with SHARES and COMMENTS.
When someone SHARES your post, you do not have to pay for any of that future engagement on your post.

Meaning… everything after the SHARE is all free advertising for you.

The more fueled your target audience is on the issue…
The more likely your target audience will share your message with others.

This drives down your cost per engagement, cost per click, cost per lead, cost per sale… etc…

Typically when I launch a campaign around Newsjacking…
I will see our cost per sale go from $25 on average down to under $10!
Same product… Newsjacking with ads.

The more amped up the audience… the more longstanding the energy.
For example, the whole world was amped up on a certain pandemic.
Dare I say the name….

You can see that eCOM as a whole SPIKED in revenue!
When crazy things happen you have two choices:
A) Talk about it or B) Take action!

As masters of eCOM… we need to maintain a constant state of creativity and opportunity, being mindful of trends and situations that could be Newsjacked.

I made $200,000 in 24 hours to an eCOM store with our team…
Just by standing by and being ready to pounce on an opportunity.

Listen… you don’t need to be a blackbelt in Newsjacking on your first attempt.
Dip your toes in the water with a post to social media or a paid ad.

But when you get a few Newsjacking wins under you belt…
It is time to move on a bigger scale and take massive action.

For a t-shirt brand… this could mean:

  1. Have a blank t-shirt photoshoot completed

  2. Have a person who can photoshop realistic looking designs

  3. Have a person who can turn your ideas into products fast

  4. Have your team trained to execute this in less than 1 hour

  5. Publish your new product online and have a instant fulfillment plan

Having these 5 things in play (which could be just 1 person for you) who can take immediate and swift action could make you millions of dollars a year.

And I am not talking about print on demand here…
We literally would do a pre-sale of a new product the SECOND the issue happens.

Move fast, take swift action and you will find your formula to Newsjack!

This isn’t only about t-shirts… this can work in any market!

For example… back in 2011, there was a scene band lead singer who was scamming his fans online by “selling” his laptop to them. He “sold” his laptop over and over to feed his drug addiction.

When the news broke, I launched a software platform (that day!) where people could post fake products for sale and share the fake products on their social media.

Well, my servers crashed when millions of people visited the site, all from a single tweet I posted that went viral.

The genius part of this was the singer’s name was Jonny Craig.
So I purchased jonnycraigslist.com and deployed a quick out of the box software to one of my servers.

So that is how to capitalize on events that everyone knows is happening…
Such as Trending on Twitter

But what about keywords or trends that are not Trending on Twitter but are increasing in popularity slowly with very low competition?
